Book Review : The Hunter – Asa Nonami

19 May

The Hunter: A Detective Takako Otomichi MysteryThe Hunter: A Detective Takako Otomichi Mystery by Asa Nonami

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Hunter began with an incident happened at a restaurant, a man was burn alive in front of waiter, the plot moved quickly to police investigation conducted by a team which was included Sergeant Tamotsu Takizawa, then came along beautiful and young Takako Otomichi who was the only female member of the motorcycle squad, and Takizawa and Takako became a partner for solving this mystery

Takizawa was unhappy with this situation, gender issue was still a big deal in police department, and Takizawa had been an asshole and never tried to be friendly with Takako.

I like the development of characters in this novel, I realized that somehow between Takako and Takizawa would never be any romance nor friendship, but what really matter is they got their jobs done.

also this novel reminds me that to solve a murder or mystery, you need the WHOLE team, so this is NOT a ONE MAN SHOW, because one rely on others, and one also MUST help friends to get this done.
so no more Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, this is all about a TEAMWORK.

and I really love about the beautiful description about the unusual relationship between Takako and “The Hunter” (a half breed wolf dog), they both trust each other, but they both have different motives.

beautiful phrase I noted from this novel :

“True Happiness could never come from other’s Grief and Sadness”

all and all, this is a nice and enjoyable novel, very good for a bedtime book.

Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer (Theodore Boone, #1)Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Okay, and so please remind me again NOT TO BUY A BOOK BEFORE READING A REVIEW, because I always end up regretting reading a lousy book like this KID LAWYER by one of my favorite writer, John Grisham.

Dear Mr. Grisham,
somehow, I wonder what was you intention to write this novel ? did you want to follow other famous novelist who wrote great novels for kids ? or did you want to introduce about legal things to kids ?

I’m so sorry, but I think this novel is a big fail……..

Meet Theodore Boone, 13yo, raised from a lawyer family (mother and father are lawyer, his uncle was a retired lawyer too, and FOR GOD’S SAKE, HE GOT A DOG NAMED WITH “JUDGE”)

Theo wasn’t like any other regular 13yo kids, who talked about movies, games, girls…..instead he always hang around the courtroom (really ? why didn’t they kick that kiddo outta there ?)

Theo loved all about legal things sooooooooooo much, he even could give LEGAL ADVICE to his friends, just like any other lawyer (SHUT UP) and somehow he arranged a visit with his classmates to a courtroom, and he didn’t forget to remind all of his friends THAT REAL COURTROOM IS DAMN BORING AND IT IS NOT AS DRAMATIC AS IN THE MOVIES

Theo didn’t feel anything with a cute girl at his age who got crush on him, because he got a different taste, unlike other boy in his age, Theo got a crush with a mature woman, twice of his age, and pregnant…….

okay so I stopped read it here, exactly at page 72, only waste my time reading this non-sense.
but anyway I gave a star and also write this review, to help me to remind myself not to buy a cheap book without reading a review before it.

AirframeAirframe by Michael Crichton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If you think you will find “Airframe” like any other novels or movies about airplane crash, then you wrong, the drama and main-plot about Airframe were during AFTER the airplane incident, not during or before it.

so basically it was more like “Air plane Crash investigation” conducted by several people who worked at the Norton Aircraft who built that airplane. the main protagonist was Casey Singelton, mid-thirties, single-mom, control-freak, unfashionable and always follow by the rules.

Casey who was one of the top executive in that company, at beginning, already smelled something fishy about that incident, so she digged up all the evidence, unaware that some people in her company who watched all her steps, and did something to prevent her finding a fact about that incident.

I gave 3 of 5 stars for this novel, though I really enjoyed this novel very much, (actually one of Crichton best novel since “Congo”) but the plot was a bit boring at the middle of the novel, so I skipped it and really enjoyed the dramas at the end part of this novel.

So Airframe is an enjoyable, non-serious reading for weekend, and I really glad I read this novel !

Antifragile ~ things that gain from disorder (book review)

3 Mar

“What doesn’t kill me kills others”

Keeping one’s distance from an ignorant person is equivalent to keeping company with a wise man” – Ali bin Abi Talib.

“The good is mostly in the absence of the bad”

“Suckers try to win arguments, Non-Suckers try to win”

“never ask a doctor what you should do, ask him what he would do if he were in your place”

dan saya modifikasi jadi begini ;

“never ask a TRADER what you should buy or sell, ask him what he would do if he were in your place”

No result without efforts,

no joy without sadness,

no convictions without uncertainty.

All and all, buku ini sangat menarik, menyebalkan, membingungkan tapi juga mencerahkan, dan baru kali ini saya bisa begitu membenci dan menyukai satu buku pada saat yang bersamaan, dan tentu saja seperti kedua buku Taleb sebelumnya, saya akan membaca buku ini berulang-ulang :)

Book Review : Litigators ~ Grisham

22 Nov

The LitigatorsThe Litigators by John Grisham
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When a friend told me that Litigators was a better version of “Street Lawyers”, I was wondering about it, but then I began with reading Street lawyer first then continued with Litigators

And my friend was totally right about it

Litigators had a wicked, dark sense of humor, loaded with non-sense plots that somehow I felt Grisham was laughing his own ass when writing this novel, How come litigators never enter federal courtroom before ? Oscar Finley and Wally Figg from Finley & Figg small firm were PARIAH lawyers who took trashy cases like quickie divorces or car wrecks.

and then came along young David Zinc, freshly sober, a Harvard graduate, just quit his dream job from big firm in the country, and landed at the front door of Finley & Figg ( please don’t try to use any common sense here)

Wally Figg (or I should call him Wally the Pig) tried his luck with tackled biggest case they never dream of, filled lawsuit against the biggest pharmacies and dragged their small firm into the complete failure and a humiliating fiasco.

And so David came and handled with all the mess that Wally had left. And at the end of this saga, I enjoyed the twist and I really didn’t mind with this happy-ending, after all everyone there – include the defendants, were entitled with the victory that they had pursued. it was a win-win ending, just like others Grisham’s saga

So all and all, it was a great book, I considered this is the best Grisham’s saga that I ever read, because there was no longer bad and good persons anymore, just some ordinary guys tried to make money out of bad cases

Book Review : The Real Millionaire Next Door

12 Oct

FRUGAL, FRUGAL, FRUGAL…..

They live well below their means

“You are not what you Drive”

Oh ya buku ini saya beli di buku bekas, so am I a cheapy wifey too ? ;)

Stephen “7 Habits” Covey’s Legacy

17 Jul

“Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic” – Stephen R. Covey

  1. Be Proactive
  2. Begin with the End in Mind
  3. Put First Things First
  4. Think Win/Win
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the Saw

Gajah mati meninggalkan gading, harimau mati meninggalkan belang, manusia mati meninggalkan jasa….

Thanks, Mr. Covey….for your great books

“Live, love, laugh, leave a legacy.”

- Stephen R. Covey

Book’s Reviews from Goodreads ; The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium, #3)The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Friendship is probably the most common form of love.”
― Stieg LarssonThe Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

Unlike the previous two books, my expectation for this book was really high, and I wasn’t disappointed after reading it, frankly I enjoyed it very much ! what I really like about Larsson’s Millenium series that it has different “topic” for each book.

for example, in the first book the topic was about anti-semit, sexual harassment and domestic violence, Larsson successfully conveyed it thoroughly in every chapter of that book.

and in this third book, I guess the theme or topic is about “Amazon Fighters” or “Army of women” or nowadays as known as “Alpha-Female”

All of the female characters in this book were born as stubborn fighters, alpha-dominant-women who kicked ass those jerks, and off course the smartest and the most kicked-ass female and the center of this book is none other than ; Lisbeth Salander.

My favorite part of this book was at the courtroom, Lisbeth and her lawyer played their part perfectly and flawless, I think that courtroom section was much better compared with John Grisham ( no way ! just kidding, folks )

One flaw is ; why the hell is Mikael Blomkvist a chick-magneto ?

A middle aged journo has that such kinda charm so every girls in that book couldn’t say no to him ? pleeeaaaseeee……..

all and all, this is a very enjoyable book, must read it !

by the way, I read this book months ago, but didn’t think to write a review till now, fyi

Kick-ass Heroines of USS Voyager

9 Jun

“Voyager may not be as big as a Galaxy-class ship, but she’s quick and smart…”

If I must name one of the best tv-series that I always want to watch over and over again, it’s Star Trek Voyager . not that I don’t like other Star Trek series, I do love The Next Generation and also enjoy watching Deep Space Nine, but there’s something that made Voyager different from them ; it was because of those Kick-ass female heroines of Voyager’s crews .

So I presume some of you don’t know what the heck is Voyager ? perhaps you’re not even born yet during that cool era, Star Trek Voyager is one of Star Trek tv-series produced for seven seasons, during 1995 until 2001, can you imagine what the Computer Generated-Imagery / CGI was looked like ? awful, terrible, but during that moment it was the best ever, since Voyager was the first Star Trek series that used CGI.

And the plot was quite simple : Stay Alive, Get back home, Get the hell out of Delta-Quadrant and return safely to Alpha-Quadrant.

Voyager was stranded in Delta-Quadrant area at her very first mission, this area was unknown and unexplored, and they were 70.000 light-years from home, that made a 70 years journey to Alpha-Quadrant aka. home, aka. Earth ( oh shit ! ) but no worries, folks ! Since the crew of Voyager were stubborn survivors and had a weird sense of adventure, they just kept focus to their goal ; Return Home, even thought this small ship had limited resources, compare to other Federal Star-ships.

Captain Kathryn Janeway

The only female captain in Star Trek series is Janeway, at first I was skeptical for her abilities, you could say they made a female captain just to please those hot-blooded female trekkies, but  Janeway was not your regular sweet and kind captain, she might not as cool as James Kirk, or didn’t have charm like Jean-Luc Picard, but she was so adventurous, bold, caring and had that weird sense of humor and with her easy-going personality, like “oh well, now we are here in Delta-Quadrant….now let’s go home” attitude that made me so into this female captain.

Her Leadership was outstanding but many times she made unpopular decisions, like recruiting enemies and renegades as crew of ship. Chakotay, B’leana Torres and  Seven-of -Nine were once the enemies of Voyager but soon played important roles in order to accomplish their only mission ; Return Home.

There are three things to remember about being a starship captain: keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship, and never abandon a member of your crew.” – Janeway

Sometimes Janeway put aside federal protocols and even risk her life to save her crew members,  especially during recruiting female borg, Seven-of-Nine , most of Voyager’s crew didn’t agree with her decision, like “what the heck that borg doing in our ship ? assimilate all of us into borg too ?” ….But later her decision brought many benefits to Voyager, including adapting borg’s technologies into their vessel.

There were not many  stories about her romance, but one thing that I like most was during the encounter of Q, a Godlike creature who falsely laid his eyes for Janeway and used his “God” charm to mate with her ( oh my goodness ! ) not enough with all of these troubles, later Janeway must babysit Q’s offspring, Q2 , who really made her get on her nerves with his chaotic behavior.

B’leanna Torres

If there’s no Janeway in that ship, surely I will choose Torres as the most kick-ass heroine of Voyager ! Half Human – Half Klingon, B’leanna possessed that bad tempered and hot-blooded Klingon attitude, with “Yeah, whatever, dudes” and “in your face” facial expression, she never sugar-coated things, she said what she thought and felt, nevertheless B’leanna was truly a Geek, as Chief Engineer, she’d done some extraordinary jobs maintaining warp drive in engineering rooms, and created portable emitter for the Doctor so that fussy holographic program could go around the ship and mingle with the whole crew.

At first time she was on board Voyager, B’leanna didn’t trust Janeway, but later after sharing some kick-ass adventures – including encountering some alien wars, B’leanna became one of Janeway’s most reliable and most daring crew member ever.

Her Klingon bad temper had made B’leanna difficult to get into a relationship, but unintendedly, she had fallen for cute womanizer, Tom Paris, somehow I wish she would go with a kinda serious type like Harry Kim, but this weird couple was really serious, later they got married and had daughter.

Kes

I had nothing against her, but all I can say is she didn’t belong in this series, Kes was far too feminine , if she was appeared in The Next Generation, surely she will fit there with other feminine and melancholy female characters. Therefore she just lasted for three sessions, I was glad they finally replaced her with that hot female Borg droid ; Seven-0f-Nine !

Seven-of-Nine

All trekkies cheered for her ! with that “Hello, but my face is up here” body , Seven-of-Nine was one of the hottest female character in science fiction ever ! can not compare her with other hot sci-fi babes like Princess Leia, since Seven-of-Nine was once a Borg Droid, she was assimilated with Borg when she was only six years old, so when she joined Voyager, Seven-of-Nine only had a vague memories of her past human life.

Life in Voyager was hard for her, she never understood why guys always checked for her body ( oh yeah!) and why girls always moved away from her ( no wonder lah, every chicks will envy her flawless body) so Seven-of-Nine asked help from her only friend, the Doctor, she asked that holographic doctor to become her guidance for her date and teach her some human behavior lesson, for Seven-of-Nine was clueless in human relationship like Data, but asking for help to a non-human, especially a holographic program was, somehow, useless….“Like a Blind leading a Blind” exclaimed Tom Paris when he heard the Doctor guided Seven-of-Nine for her date.

Nevertheless, Seven-of-Nine made some importance contributions for Voyager, one of them was to adapt Borg technologies in Voyager, so that ship could move faster and get closer to home. during the journey, after gaining some experience in human behavior, at last Seven-of-Nine could get into a relationship with none other than the hottest dude in the ship, Chakotay. they were madly in love, and even made Janeway willing to scarifies herself in order to fix things ( watch the last and most epic episode ; Endgame ) so that couple could have a normal and happy life in earth.

So I guess that’s all of them, those super kick-ass heroines of USS Voyager , not like other sci-fi female characters who just lay there and wait for help from their knigh-in-shining-armor , these hot-blooded-chicks were truly kicked ass, and that was made them survive in the most cruel-some journey in Delta-Quadrant space.

Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst DogMarley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

as a dog lover, undoubtedly i love this book, but this book has a one thing that made it different from others, it was written so naturally as if we could imagine that we’re living the same life of John Grogan. and Marley is no hero-dog that could safe a child from drowning in river or fetch newspaper, but he was a troublesome dog that always brought mischief in the Grogan family.

The turning point was during the last days of Marley, the Grogan realized that Marley was the center point of that family, and somehow because of that stupid-idiotic dog they had became closer as a happy family. and honestly, I cried everytime I read that part when marley passed away…..

This is one of the most touching-heartmelted-laughable non-fiction book, especially for those who love animals
